David "Baddy" Treloar is the bearded giant in 

 Alby Falzon's shimmering 1972 jewel of a surf movie. Or rather, Baddy's the 

 bearded giant—the one who isn't Nat Young. You'll be glad to hear Baddy is very much still alive and surfing Angourie, on New South Wales' North Coast, which is a pleasant surprise not just because men in his family usually die of heart disease in late middle age (Baddy's on the far side of 65), but also because he inhaled enough particulate matter while sanding boards in the OSHA-free '70s to fill a cancer ward.

 is a sun-drenched joy. He lives simply, builds his own boards, and surfs mostly-empty semitropical point waves. Falzon caught all that for Treloar's poetic movie profile and set it to an ambling folk-rock tune called "Simple Ben," written and sung by yet another bearded man, John J. Francis, who breathed in 

 the way Baddy breathed in the fiberglass leavings of his new stick. I found this clip of Francis performing "Simple Ben" for what I'm guessing was an Aussie TV show, and thought it would mix well with Baddy's 

Are you laughing a little in your head right now because "Simple Ben" reminds you of 

 I did, on and off, for two days. Now try and get that association out of your mind. The video works so much better when you do.
