Levelheaded surf photographer from Hawaii; best known for his evocative travel photography and his mid-'90s images of the Hawaiian big-wave break known as Jaws. 

Aeder was born in Seattle (1955), grew up in La Jolla, California, began surfing and photography in his early teens, and with no formal training had several photos published in

 magazines before his senior year of high school. Aeder moved to Maui in 1975, and three years later he and his younger brother Kirk were listed as contributing photographers on the

 masthead; in 1987 Erik was promoted to senior photographer. 

Aeder often traveled to exotic surf locations, and developed a knack for the pulled-back angle: his 1978 lineup shots of Nias helped alert surfers to Indonesia's vast wave potential, and an image from Easter Island—included in his 1982 

 feature, "The Most Remote Surf Spot in the World"—showed a lone surfer walking across a grass-covered plateau, framed by ancient lava-stone moai statues, with a perfect wave breaking in the background. 

In 1994, at Jaws, Aeder began shooting the small group of Hawaiian surfers who had recently invented the personal watercraft–assisted tow-in method, which reconfigured big-wave riding. Throughout the 2000s he continued to document the action at Jaws.
