Thoughtful, well-traveled and cosmopolitan surf writer and photographer, originally from the San Fernando Valley, California; the only professional surfer to win a Fulbright Scholarship. "Jamie is not only an accomplished storyteller and incredibly good-looking," fellow writer Derek Rielly said of Brisick, "he has been in the thick of it his whole life: surf, skate, and snow."

Brisick was born (1966) in Los Angeles, grew up in nearby Encino and Westlake, began riding waves at age 11 during a family trip to Honolulu, and spent his formative surfing years at Malibu.

In 1983 and '84, Brisick was the Western Surfing Association's year-end juniors division ratings leader. In 1985 he won the men's division of the WSA's West Coast Surfing Championships. Brisick turned pro in 1986 but was unable to replicate the success he had as an amateur. Tall (6' 1" 175 lbs), blond and handsome, he modeled for Quiksilver and other surfwear brands, and had a handful of brief movie, TV and video appearances.

For eight years, beginning in 1992, Brisick freelanced articles for various surf magazines, and from 1998 to 2000 he was the executive editor at 

In 2002, not long after moving to New York to remove himself from what he called the "Bromuda Triangle" of Southern California, Brisick published his first book, 

We Approach our Martinis with Such High Expectations,

 a semi-experimental collection of essays and photographs.

In 2008, Brisick won a Fulbright Scholarship and spent four months in Japan doing research on how that country did and did not assimilate Western-style surf culture.

A thoughtful and easygoing person with a writing style to match, Brisick's life and work have nonetheless both been in part defined by tragedy. In 1987, his older brother died from a heroin overdose; in 2013 his wife died in a traffic accident. Brisick processed both events through writing, and did the same in 2018, after a series of fires roared through California. The text message came just before 7 a.m.: “Mandatory evacuation for the entire city of Malibu.” I grabbed my car keys, wallet, phone, laptop, writing stuff, and a change of clothes. It was Friday, November 9th. I was not worried. Malibu gets a fire nearly every year. Never do they creep down the Santa Monica Mountains, leap the Pacific Coast Highway, and take out homes where I live, in Point Dume.

But this one did. And it took out my home with an almost personal vengeance. Watching KTLA news with a friend in his Venice Beach studio the following evening, he pointed at the screen. “That looks like your house.” The camera zoomed in. “That’s definitely your house.” The shot—a firefighter blasting water at my inflamed bedroom—would play on repeat throughout the weekend. I became a kind of poster child for the Woolsey Fire.

Brisick has lived and worked in Sydney, Venice, New York, and Rio, among other locations. His photography has been shown in galleries in LA, Manhattan, San Francisco, Sao Paulo. Apart from the
