Quiet, ectomorphic goofyfooter from Durban, South Africa; world-ranked #7 in 1985. Michael Burness, son of contest organizer Peter Burness, began surfing at Durban's Bay of Plenty in 1970 at age eight. His pro career was put on hold in 1981, as he completed his mandatory two-year army service, which Burness claimed helped him on the world tour. "Kids start out on the circuit, and think they're a big deal. The army will wake you up from that, quickly."

Burness was a light (6', 140 pounds), fast, flowing surfer; he never won a world tour contest, but consistently made the quarterfinals. He was nonetheless a virtually invisible pro. Not once did he appear in an American- or Australian-made surf movie or video, and at the end of the 1986 season, surf journalist Derek Hynd, in his annual review of the ratings leaders, could say little about Burness's season except to note that "he holds the current pro circuit record for a steady, faithful relationship while touring this defiled, AIDS-infested globe with a circus of marauding, sexual animals. Future world title: No chance."

Fearful of big waves, Burness pulled out of the 1986 Hawaiian Triple Crown, the only top-rated surfer to do so that year.

As of 2015, Bryce Burness, Michael's son, was one of South Africa's best young pro surfers.
