Innovative businessman and environmentalist from Ventura, California; founder of Patagonia, the hugely successful "green" sportswear and sporting goods company. Chouinard was born (1938) in Lewiston, Maine, and was nine when he moved with his family to Burbank, California. 

He started surfing in high school, became a legendary rock climber in the '60s, began selling handmade climbing hardware in 1964, and founded Patagonia in 1974. Chouinard remained an avid surfer, and long after Patagonia's warm and soft polar fleece jackets became a fashion favorite for urbanites as well as hardcore climbers, he began putting more time and money into what he called his "favorite sport." 

In 1988 he spent $25,000 on a feasibility study for building an artificial reef at Emma Wood State Beach in Ventura (construction costs prevented the reef from being built). In 1997 Patagonia brought out a strong, light, expensive ($500 to $780) line of surfboards. 

Chouinard had meanwhile put Patagonia on a "no growth" business plan, as a way to balance environmental sustainability with profits, and his company donated millions to environmental groups. The philanthropy, Chouinard told the 

 in 1994, was liberating. "I'm not finished [with charity], but I'm doing enough. And because of that, it's a lot easier to say, 'Screw it, I'm going surfing.'"
