Warm, moist South American country adjoining the continent to Central America via Panama; the only South American country with coastlines on both the Atlantic (by way of the Caribbean Sea) and Pacific Oceans. 

Surfing is virtually unheard of in Colombia; wave-riders number in the dozens, and the country's civil war and reputation for drug-trade violence has for the most part kept tourists at bay—surfers included. Colombia's 580-mile Pacific Ocean coastline is one of the country's least-inhabited areas, roadless in places, and surfing here often requires a boat or plane. 

Waves arrive all year, but are best and biggest—often 10 feet or larger—during the November-to-February dry season. Temperatures along the coast are typically equatorial, ranging from warm and pleasant to insufferably hot. The water temperature is generally around 80. 

Playa Boca Grande, a road-accessible beachbreak near Tumaco, close to the Ecuadorian border, is Colombia's most popular surf break. Colombia's 710-mile Caribbean shore has more roads than the Pacific coast. The surf is dependent almost exclusively on short-fetch wind swell, and rarely gets over six foot. Nearly all of Colombia's Caribbean surf breaks, however, are fronted by deep-water offshore canyons, which help produce faster, more powerful waves than might be expected. 

Cabo La Vela, near Colombia's northeast tip, has aquamarine water and white-sand beaches, and some of the country's finest surf. It's also been used as an exit port for drug traffickers, as have many dozens of other beaches across the Colombian coast, both Pacific and Caribbean. Many of the coastal roads were in fact made by drug cartels as transportation links, and are patrolled regularly; visiting surfers have been advised not to get too ambitious in their search for waves. 

Colombia was named one of "five of the most undesirable-yet surfable-places" on the planet by 

 magazine in 2005; two years later the magazine sent a troop of pro surfers to Colombia where they found excellent, uncrowded surf, and few problems, though the group was carefully monitored by armed guards throughout their stay.
