Attractive, media-savvy group of California women surfers, formed in 1977 by Jericho Poppler. Other members included Shannon Aikman, 1982 world title winner Debbie Beacham, Brenda Scott, Lisa Tomb, and Candy Woodward. The Golden Girls had no real agenda except, as they announced, to promote themselves "collectively and individually as pro women athletes." 

ABC's Eyewitness News did a feature on the Golden Girls in 1979, with lots of shots of the Girls in their matching customized wetsuits, but the group drifted apart in the early '80s. The Golden Girls' position relative to both surfing and feminism was later questioned. 

"The problem was," Wahine magazine wrote in 1998, "not every girl was a Golden Girl. In retrospect, the public relations ploy didn't really jibe with the larger women's movement."
