Surf activist and environmentalist from Santa Monica, California; founder of the Surfrider Foundation, and co-founder of the Groundswell Society. Hening was born (1950) in San Antonio, Texas, and began surfing Malibu in the mid-'60s. 

From 1975 to 1980 he worked as a schoolteacher in El Salvador, and in the early to mid-'80s worked on NASA's Space Shuttle program at Jet Propulsion Laboratories in Pasadena, California. He founded Surfrider in 1984 with Tom Pratte and Lance Carson, remained an integral part of the organization over the years, but eventually became ambivalent about the group and about surfing's media/industrial structure in general. 

The once-informative surf magazines, he said in 1997, had become "transient entertainment," and editors were afraid to do anything that might "step on the toes of advertisers." Surfrider had helped instill some degree of environmental consciousness among surfers, Hening continued, "but I'm disillusioned with teenagers in the surf industry who don't understand what their responsibilities are as corporate citizens. And some of those teenagers are millionaires in their 40s." 

In 1995, Hening founded the Groundswell Society, a surfing group dedicated to "critical thinking, ecology, fine art, history, equipment and leadership"; the group has self-published four books and hosted seminars; the Society's first surf education field trip, to Peru, took place in 2002. 

Hening's mammoth, 525 page novel of corporate surf greed and surf culture was published in 2004. He remains active with the Groundswell Society and as a public speaker.
