Honors and formal-dress awards ceremony sponsored by 

 magazine—held in 1966 and 1967. The Hall of Fame Awards were 

 answer to the 1963-founded SURFER Magazine Poll Awards; while SURFER asked readers to cast votes for their favorite surfers, 

 polled an international panel of 150 surfing experts. Also, whereas the SURFER Poll had just two categories, men's and women's, Hall of Fame Awards laurels were distributed to Hall of Fame inductees, as well as specialties and regional division categories, plus an Outstanding International Surfer division—more than 40 divisions in all, from New Zealand Women to Tandem to Motion Picture Photography.

There was never an actual "hall" for the International Surfing Hall of Fame.

The first Hall of Fame ceremony took place on June 7, 1966, at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium (home to the Academy Awards presentation from 1961 to 1968), and was one of the year's surf society highlights, attended by more than 2,000 people. Adam West, star of ABC-TV's 

, was a presenter. Virtually all honored surfers were there in formal dress, including original inductee Duke Kahanamoku, who died 18 months later. Sponsors were relieved that the crowd behaved itself. Journalist Ron Haworth's Hall of Fame report for the 

 made it plain that the awards presentation was in part a public relations move. "Surely," Haworth wrote, "the formal affair did much to alleviate the long-hair, juvenile delinquent image surfing has borne wrongly in the past."

The 1967 presentation was held at the Hollywood Palladium.

In 1991, the Balboa Park Hall of Champions in San Diego hosted a third International Surfing Hall of Fame awards banquet, with 26 surfers inducted.
