Versatile Hawaiian surfer from Makaha, Oahu; three-time winner of the World Longboard Championships (1993, 1994, and 1995); middle son of Makaha surfing demigod Richard "Buffalo" Keaulana and younger brother to big-wave ace Brian Keaulana. 

Rusty was born (1966) and raised in Makaha, began riding waves as a toddler, and by his early teens was recognized as one of the island's best switchfooters, able to ride with either foot forward. 

He claimed his first longboard world title at age 27, in churning double-overhead surf at Haleiwa on Oahu's North Shore. His second title, won at Malibu, was controversial, as Keaulana and two Hawaiian teammates, while surfing in the four-man final, worked together to prevent the lone California competitor and odds-on favorite, Joel Tudor, from catching waves. Keaulana won his third and final title at St. Leu, on Réunion Island. 

Keaulana was both celebrated and criticized as a "progressive school" longboarder, filling his repertoire with dynamic shortboard-style turns, spins, and cutbacks. He had also developed into a first-rate big-wave rider, and placed fifth in the 1999 Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau big-wave contest at Waimea Bay. 

Keaulana has appeared in more than 20 surf movies and videos, including 

, a surf video travelogue, was released in 1999. Keaulana is married to Sunny Kanaiaupuni, daughter of venerated '70s Hawaiian power surfer Barry Kanaiaupuni.
