Tough-talking Hawaiian regularfooter from the North Shore of Oahu; winner of the 2002 Billabong XXL Big Wave Award. Rothman, the son of Sunset Beach don and Da Hui cofounder Eddie Rothman, was born (1984) on the North Shore and began surfing at age three. 

Raised among the most powerful waves and surfers on the planet, Rothman displayed major league calm in large, dangerous surf at a young age. The self-styled "Prince of the North Shore," Rothman surfed Waimea Bay for the first time when he was eight years old, was towing-in at North Shore outer reefs at 13, and at 16 took fourth place in the Tow-In World Cup of Surfing. 

Two years later, Rothman assumed a place in the pantheon of international big wave stars by towing into a colossal wave at Jaws pegged by experts at 66 feet; at the time it was thought to be the largest wave ever ridden. The ride earned the 18-year-old charger the Billabong XXL Big Wave Award, a $66,000 paycheck, and a great deal of attention from the surf media, though Rothman's relationship with the surf literati has been tepid at best. 

"The surf industry just don't like me for some reason," the brooding Hawaiian explained, "fuck them; I don't like them either." (The half-jewish Rothman did however discuss his faith in a 2009 issue of JVibe magazine, saying that he celebrated Haukkah, and that he had "one of those things" - a muzuzah - "on the door outside my house.") 

In 2007, Rothman won the O'Neill World Cup, the second leg of the Triple Crown Series, at his home break of Sunset Beach.
