Durable, diplomatic surf photographer from north San Diego County, California; best known for his portraits and behind-the-scenes candids. Sherman was born (1963) and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana, moved with his family to San Diego at age 10, and began surfing at 12. The following year, as an assignment for an eighth-grade photography class, he used a hand-me-down camera to shoot a local skateboard contest (Sherman himself was a pro skater in his teen years); he was influenced, he later said, by the gritty black-and-white 

 in the late 1980s, then directed a pair of films for the Powell/Peralta skateboard company. In the early 1990s he contributed photos to 

Sherman's candid work is done on the fly, at pro tour contests and at post-contest parties, but his real strength is portraiture: A 1999 Sherman image shows Australian world title contender Taj Burrow squatting in a junkyard dressed as the Road Warrior; a 1997 shot, taken in a French hotel room, has four-time world champion Lisa Andersen standing by an open window wrapped in a sheet and holding a glass of red wine. "They trust me," Sherman responded, when asked how he's able to get the sport's biggest names to follow his artistic lead. "Plus I work very quickly."

Eleven-time world champion Kelly Slater has long been a favorite subject of Sherman's; in 2011, just a few weeks after Slater won his 10th world title, 

 published a special 100-page commemerative issue titled "Kelly Slater: Through the Lens of Steve Sherman."
