Style-conscious website and quarterly magazine, headquartered in Newport Beach, California, loaded with hipster chic video and editorial content with a soft spot for non-competing pro surfers and beat literature; founded in 2012 by former 

magazine editor Travis Ferré, along with Scott Chenoweth, Stuart Cornuelle, and surf moviemaker Kai Neville.

Unlike most surf media platforms, What Youth ignores the surf industry news cycle, focusing instead on producing original content, usually in the form of short video clips, black-and-white photo essays, and interviews with shabbily cool musicians, skaters, and surfers. While the website is a handsome if fairly standard vertical feed of videos and short editorial bon mots, What Youth’s magazine is a uniquely eye-catching collection of arthouse photos, interviews with non-surfing artists, and travel diaries, all printed on oversized sheets of thick card stock. The tone of the magazine skews toward a kind of wholesome rebellion with plenty of shots of tattooed young surfers and occasionally topless models taking plugs from booze bottles, cigarettes dangling in hand.

What Youth’s contributors have included pro surfers Dion Agius, Dane Reynolds, Kassia Meador, and Kolohe Andino. In October 2013, longtime Quiksilver marketing wizards Danny Kwock and Troy Eckert joined original investors Preston Murray and Steve Zeldin, in partial ownership of What Youth’s parent company, Trade Gothic LLC.
