Professional men's and women's surf contest held annually since 1975 on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii; the season-ending event on the men's world pro circuit from 1975 to 1982, and again in 1991; the women's season ender in 1977, 1980–82, 1991–93, and 2001. Kentucky Fried Chicken, sponsor for the men's division of the inaugural World Cup, pulled out just days before the event got under way, forcing event organizer Fred Hemmings to put up the $6,500 in prize money himself. Early rounds were held at Haleiwa, with the finals moved to Sunset Beach; 18-year-old Australian Mark Richards won. Lancers wine, meanwhile, sponsored the women's portion of the World Cup, held at Haleiwa, and winner Margo Oberg of Hawaii earned $4,000 for her victory, the largest women's surfing cash prize up to that point. The world pro circuit debuted the following year, with the men's World Cup scheduled as the season's final event and broadcast on CBS. The women's pro tour was formed the following year, with the World Cup wrapping up the tour. For the next few seasons the World Cup was usually held at Haleiwa. The finals for the 1979 men's World Cup, still regarded as one of the most exciting afternoons in pro surfing history, saw fourth-ranked Richards vault over three surfers to take his first pro tour championship. The World Cup has been sponsored by nearly a dozen companies over the decades, including Hang Ten, Ocean Pacific, Hard Rock Cafe, and G-Shock. It became a men's-only event in 1994. Rip Curl began underwriting the contest in 1997, and in 2001 it was renamed the Rip Curl Cup and returned, for one year only, as the season finale. The $250,000 event was won by Hawaiian Myles Padaca, who earned $30,000 for the victory. Hawaii's Lynne Boyer is the only four-time World Cup winner; Michael Ho of Hawaii is the only three-time men's division winner. World Cup winners are as follows.
