Likable, country-strong regularfoot pro surfer from New South Wales, Australia; 2013 world title runner-up. Wright was born (1994) in Lennox Head, and learned to surf as a toddler, charging into the shorebreak with her five siblings (including older brother and future world tour star Owen Wright), all of whom were taught to surf by their plumber father. As a child, Wright and her family traveled Australia’s amateur contest scene almost nonstop in a six-bed passenger van.

By her teens, Wright was one of her country's most dominant competitors. She picked off Australian National Titles in multiple age categories in 2008-2009, became the youngest person, male or female, to ever win a major ASP event (the 2008 Beachley Classic; Wright was 14), and took home the World Pro Junior championship in 2010. She made her full-time pro tour debut in 2011 and finished the year ranked fourth, easily winning Rookie of the Year honors; the following season she again placed 4th.

Wright is a sturdy, powerful, broad-shouldered, function-over-form surfer. The big frontside hack, her signature move, is without equal among women pros. She's also a first-rate tuberider. Along with Carissa Moore of Hawaii, Wright stepped directly onto the world tour as a likely successor to then-reigning world champion Stephanie Gilmore.

Wright bucked the sexpot trend embraced by many of her contemporary pros by surfing in full-coverage swimsuits rather than dental floss bikinis; while surfers like Alana Blanchard and Laura Enever starred in promo vids that doubled as fashion shoots, Wright filmed a segment for a Surfing Australia documentary in which she grinds out some house-framing carpentry alongside her father.

In spring, 2013, Wright showed off her comfort in heaving reefbreak waves, trading hellacioius eight-foot tubes at a Micronesian break called P-Pass with a group of seasoned male pros. Her best wave that day resulted in a photo of one of the biggest, cleanest barrels ever ridden by a woman, and nabbed her the cover of 

 magazine. “I was so petrified, I thought I was going to die,” Wright told 

editor Janna Irons. “It looks like I’m smiling [in the photo] but I was just screaming my head off.”

Wright and Moore battled head-to-head throughout the 2013 season. Wright started off with a win at the season-opening Roxy Pro, Moore answered back by taking both the Margaret River Pro and Rip Curl Pro; Wright pulled ahead two stops later; then Moore won event #6. It all came down to the final contest of the season, the Cascais Girls Pro, in Portugal. In semi-sloppy beachbreak waves, Wright lost in the quarters, while Moore went on to win both the event and the 2013 title.
