Gung-ho water sportsman and surfing booster from Honolulu, Hawaii; the "Captain of the Outriggers" for Waikiki's Outrigger Canoe Club from 1910 to 1932; once celebrated as Hawaii's unofficial record holder for the longest surfing ride, after catching a big summer wave in 1917 from outside Castles Break off Waikiki to the inner waters past Cunha Break—a distance of about three-quarters of a mile.

Center was born in 1886, the son of a sugar plantation manager, and raised in Honolulu; he excelled at all sports, but was primarily a canoe paddler and swimmer. When he began surfing in 1908, he was one of the only haole (Caucasian) practitioners, and helped convince others that the sport—nearly moribund just a few years earlier—wasn't just for Hawaiians. In 1911, Center finished runner-up to Duke Kahanamoku in a 220-yard freestyle race in which Kahanamoku set a world record. Nine years later Center was a swim coach for America's team in the 1920 Olympics, which included double gold medal winner Kahanamoku. He later became the swim coach at Oahu's elite Punahou school.

Center died in 1962 at age 75, and his ashes were scattered into the surf at Waikiki. In 1991, he was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame.
