. Duane was born (1967) in Washington, D.C., raised in Berkeley, California, and began surfing in 1989. As described in 

, Duane found thrills, beauty, and identity as he came to surfing maturity in Santa Cruz:

Unless you're a strolling naturalist by nature, or a farmer or commercial fisherman or ranger, you need a medium, a game, a pleasure principle that turns knowing your home into passionate scholarship. . . . I didn't move to the beach to perfect my backside aerial attack (or even just to learn what the hell a backside aerial attack is, for that matter); I moved because my need to be in the clear, alive water of my California's Pacific, on a real, honest-to-God surfboard, on a daily basis, had been a source of nagging angst since the first time I'd ridden a wave.

. Duane was 29 when the book was released, and had just completed a Ph.D. in American literature from UC Santa Cruz.

In the late '90s and throughout the '00s, Duane wrote surf articles for the 

Maverick's: The Story of Big-Wave Surfing

 (2000). Since 2005, Duane has been a staff writer for 

Food, wine, and cooking are also favorite subjects for Duane, and in 2011 he won a National Magazine Award for his 

 article titled "Five Meals Every Man Should Master." Elizabeth Weil, Duane's wife, is also a writer; her work has appeared in the 

 No Cheating, No Dying: I Had a Good Marriage. Then I Tried To Make It Better

, is a memoir of her relationship with Duane.
