Armless wetsuit design covering a surfer's chest, trunk, and legs, originally made for diving. The long john, along with the no-legs short john and the front-zip jacket, was one of the first wetsuits used by surfers. It was often worn by itself, but surfers looking for maximum insulation in the '50s, '60s, and early '70s would layer a wetsuit jacket over a long john.
