Short-lived 1967 ABC-TV prime-time musical variety show, hosted by former teen idol and 

 star Ricky Nelson. Malibu U was shot on a private beach north of Malibu Pier. Lyrics for the upbeat 

 theme song, by Harpers Bizarre, were as follows:

There's a school where the students all major in fun,

Classes meet on the grooviest beach by the sea,

At old MU you can earn a degree in riding surfboards

Bikini bunnies and surfers you see come to

At old MU you can earn a degree in looking groovy

The school's the greatest you know what I mean

After the opening titles, Nelson, introduced as the "Dean of the Drop-Ins," made his entrance dressed in trunks and a surfer T-shirt. He would invite "professors" (pop singers) to "lecture" (sing their latest hit) to the "student body" (including a group of dancing girls known as "Malibeauties"). Surf clips were occasionally used between songs, as were brief comedy skits.

 included Buffalo Springfield, Marvin Gaye, James Darren, the Turtles, Lou Rawls, Leslie Gore, Dionne Warwick, and a rendition of "The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins" by Leonard Nimoy that was both charming and bizarre.

Malibu U earned a footnote in rock history after booking the Doors to play "Light My Fire." Singer Jim Morrison was a no-show for the taping, so Ron Krieger, brother of Doors guitarist Robbie Krieger, filled in, lip-synching the song with his back to the camera. The following day, Morrison, wearing the same blue and white striped shirt Ron had worn, was filmed in singing "Fire" in closeup, and the 

 editors cut the two performances together to make it look as if Morrison was on set with his bandmates.

 debuted in late July and was canceled after just seven episodes.
