Wisecracking surf photographer and magazine publisher, originally from New Jersey; cofounder in 1991 of the popular and impudent tabloid-size 

. "Noted for his tight action shots and razor-sharp clarity," 

 magazine noted in 1986, "Dick has helped forge a long-overdue respect for surfing in the East Coast of America."

Meseroll was born (1952) and raised in Point Pleasant, New Jersey, began surfing in 1963, and started taking surf photos in 1971 with an inexpensive department store camera. He became a masthead photographer at 

. The second top-tier East Coast photographer, after Florida's Larry Pope, Meseroll still had to hustle to make ends meet. In the mid-'80s, he was renting an apartment from his father, working out of a homemade darkroom in the garage, fixing dings, and painting houses. "When I was 20," Meseroll said the time, "I figured I'd be involved heavily in surfing until I reached 30. I wasn't going to worry about making money or finding that career-long job. I just wanted to surf and take surfing photos. And that's pretty much what I've done, except now I'm over 30. It's almost a job, but not quite."

Some of Meseroll's best work was done in the late '80s and early '90s; tight action photos remained his calling card, but his wide-angle lineup shots presented East Coast surf spots, for the first time, in full panorama—not just waves and surfers, but sand dunes, jetties, buildings, piers, and parking lots.

Meseroll cofounded the rambunctious and instantly popular newsprint giveaway 

 with fellow photographer Tom Dugan and Lally Collins. The print version of ESM was published eight times a year and ran continuously from 1991 to 2017.

Meseroll was inducted into the East Coast Surfing Hall of Fame in 2006.
