Industrious California-based surf photographer, and longtime 

 magazine photo editor. Moore began shooting surf photos in 1970 at age 22 while living in a trailer near Orange County's Santa Ana River Jetties, and had his work published for the first time the following year. In 1973 he was hired as

's darkroom technician, and in 1976 he became photo editor.

Moore specialized in crisp, front-lit, tight-action water photography, shot for the most part in Southern California and Mexico. For years, the redheaded Moore, aware that he was open to charges of opportunism arising from his dual roles as 

 photo editor and photographer, published his work under the alias "Flame." Not until "Larry's Army," a 1997 

 photo feature, was it made clear that Moore and Flame were the same person.

In February 1990, Moore and small-plane pilot Mike Castillo flew 100 miles out from San Diego, California, to the Cortes Bank, an open-ocean reef, where Moore photographed empty waves that appeared to be at least 30 foot. Cortes was revisited in January 2001, by the Moore-led "Project Neptune," a complex one-day surf adventure involving two boats, a plane, three Jet Skis, six cameramen, and six surfers, which resulted in the year's most spectacular big-wave surf session.

More than any other surf photographer, Moore let discipline and order guide his career. "He's the Oxford English Dictionary of surf imagery," surf journalist Evan Slater once said of the lean and intense photographer, "peerless in his technical knowledge of surf photos."

Moore moonlighted briefly in 2000 as photo editor for Swell.com. In 2002, 

 magazine introduced the Golden Flame Awards, with Moore selecting winners in 14 separate photographic categories.

In 2002, Moore was diagnosed with brain cancer. He died in 2005. Moore was married and had one child.

Moore contributed to a number of illustrated surfing books, including

 (1991). 30 Years of Flame: California's Legendary Surf Photographer

editor Nick Caroll was published in 2007.

Moore was inducted into the Surfing Walk of Fame in 2003, and in 2005 he was given the SIMA Lifetime Achievement Award. Shortly after Moore's death, 

and Moore's family established the Follow the Light Foundation, an organization that supports promising young surf photographers with grants and awards.
