Earnest and reserved surf publisher and photographer from San Clemente, California; founder of Longboard magazine in 1993. Motil was born (1950) in Enid, Oklahoma, began surfing in Daytona Beach, Florida, in 1963, and moved to Southern California in 1969. 

Surfboard-maker Dewey Weber bought Motil his first camera in 1970, when Motil was a Weber Surfboards team rider. Two years later he published his first surf photos in Surfer and Surfing magazines. Motil had no formal training, but nonetheless became a superb photographic technician, with an eye for richly colored beach life details: seagulls, glistening kelp bulbs, empty waves, shells, windswept beaches, and dusky back-lit lineups. 

In 1976 he was hired to work in the Surfer darkroom; for a six-month period in 1978 he worked as Surfer's photo editor, while also listed as a masthead photographer for Powder and Skateboarder magazines. From 1980 to 1985, and again from 1987 to 1989, Motil was the editorial director for Breakout, a magazine designed for California surfers. In 1985 and 1986 he was the production manager for Surfing magazine. While in his second phase at Breakout, Motil also worked as the founding photo editor for Transworld Snowboarding. 

Longboard magazine, founded in 1993 as a handsome nostalgia-tinged quarterly, brought Motil's career itinerancy to an end; he serves as the magazine's president, publisher, and editor in chief. Motil's photographs have appeared in surf magazines around the world, as well as in Time, Newsweek, Playboy, and GQ.
