Enigmatic and good-natured goofyfoot pro surfer from Norah Head, New South Wales, Australia; world-ranked #5 in 1985. Winton was born (1960) in Melbourne, Victoria, and began surfing at age eight, five years after moving with his family to Norah Head. All the Wintons were accomplished and daring: Glen's mother had been the Victoria state cycling champion, his father a four-time national hydroplane champion, and his brother would become the international altitude record holder for ultralight planes, before dying in a flying accident.

Glen Winton was the Australian Professional Surfriders Association champion in 1981 and 1982, and achieved notice for his odd multifinned surfboards. Asked in 1982 how he came up with his new four-fin design, Winton replied that he'd just simply knocked off two fins, leaving four. His style in the water was both innovative and ungainly; the tailslide maneuvers he invented in the early '80s were a blueprint for the Kelly Slater-led New School surfers in the early '90s. Winton won five world pro circuit events in his career, including the 1987 Gotcha Pro.

While never standoffish, Winton kept some distance between himself and the surfing mainstream, and seemed to enjoy the air of mystery conferred upon him by the surf media. He was called "Mr. X," although the anonymity was belied by his two 

 magazine cover shots—and by Winton himself. "Everyone actually knows who I am," he said in 1987. "The thing is, everybody doesn't know that everyone 

Winton finished runner-up in the 1993 Longboard World Championships, and retired from the shortboard pro circuit a few weeks later. He appeared in more than a dozen surf movies and videos, including 

 (1992), and also made his own early '90s commercial surf videos,
