Thirty-seven years ago today—huge early-season northwest swell; closeout conditions on the North Shore; a mad scramble for Maui and Honolua Bay. Randy Rarick was there and did a 

 cover story on this stunning day. "Surfers and spectators arrived by the carload. With every plane flight from Oahu, the crowd increased proportionately, and by late afternoon it looked like the whole lineup from Sunset had jammed over to catch the action. Terry Fitzgerald, with his amazing body torque, was a standout. Mark Richards sat way outside and caught some of the biggest waves. Smooth crusin' Peter Townend on one occasion pulled a disappearing act on a set wave that had the crowd on its feet with hoots and applause. Then there was little Michael Ho, riding a 6'5" winger roundpin that looked like a skateboard. Among the local crew, Gary Birch, Chris Lassen and long-time Honolua vet Les Potts were very impressive."
