"Keanu Cops Men's Title," Honolulu Advertiser, Nov 26, 1957

James (Jammer) Keanu of Waikiki Surf Club, representing the Army, yesterday won the men's championships of the International Surfing Meet at Makaha Beach.

Vicky Heldreich of Waikiki Surf Club captured the women's surfing crown while Timmy Guard of Outrigger Canoe Club took first place in the junior event as the 1957 Makaha Meet was brought to a close.

Conditions were ideal for surfing, with waves hitting a maximum height of 13 feet from about 10:30 a.m. throughout the afternoon.

Keanu defeated a fine field of nine finalists. Buffalo Keaulana of Makaha, Joseph Nahulu of Makaha, and Alex Adric finished in that order behind Keanu. The first four winners represented the Army.

Dutchy Kino of Waikiki Surf Club was fifth, and Joe Maunakea, also of WSC, took sixth.

Dr. Dorian Paskowitz of Israel, John Bylander of San Pedro, Dave McCloud of the San Onofre Surf Club, and Jim Haley of Huntington Beach Club, and Del Cannon, representing Laguna Beach Club, were out-of-town entrants in the men's senior event.

Miss Heldrelch defeated Ethel Kukea of WSC for the women's title by a close margin. Kehau Kea of Outrigger was third, and two WSC entrants took fourth and fifth. They were Jane Kaopuiki and Mozelle Angel.

Guard, who last Sunday won both the senior and junior paddling titles, competed yesterday although he had the flu. He gave a great performance to defeat a field of 36 entries. Joe Reydon of Waianae Youth Club, and last year s winner, was second. Delhart Numazu of WSC was third. Bill Danford of OCC fourth, and Melvin Kekuewa fifth.

The meet was cosponsored by Waikiki Surf Club and Waianae Lions Club. Joseph Dwight of Waianae and Al Bostick of WSC were co-chairmen.

A committee made up of Joe Maunakea, Dave Klausmeyer, Herb Case and Noah Kalama Sr. handled the events and rules

Officials included “Toots” Minvelle, John McMahon, Harold Chun-Hoon, Fred Van Dyke, and Bud Morrisey. John Lind was the announcer.

About 2,000 spectators lined the beach to watch the daylong event. Officials and veteran surfing fans said yesterday's performances in all three events were outstanding due to the fine surf.

Timmy Guard of the Outrigger Canoe Club emerged as the big winner yesterday as the first portion of the International Surfing Meet was held at Makaha beach in Waianae.

Displaying superb conditioning, Guard won both the men's and junior's surfboard paddling events. He entered the junior event first, then competed in the senior division to sweep both titles.

Butch Hemmings placed second in both the senior and junior events. Paul Gebauer took third in mens, while Gilly Halpern finished third in the junior division.

The women’s surfboard paddling race was won by Ethel Kukea. Jan Kaopuiki placed second and Cynthia Hemmings was third.

Mat surfing events were also held. In the men's class the winner was James Keanu. John Severson was second, Joseph Kauwale was third, Harold Mokiao was fourth and Jim Eubank was fifth.

In the juniors mat surfing the winner was Paul Strauch. Kala Kukea took second place. He was followed by Butch Hemmings. Ash Hartwell and John Marshall.

The four-man surfboard paddling relay was also run, with the Israel Surf Club entry of Doreen Paskowitz, Del Cannon, Charlie Riemes, and Mongoose Matusic taking first place.

Prelims of the women's surfing championship were also held. Finals of the mens, juniors, and women's surfing event will be held next Sunday.

Allen J Bostich, co-chairmen of the meet sponsored by Waikiki Surf Club and Waianae Lions Club, said the waves were poor but that it was an ideal sunny day for spectators. About 5,000 people took in the events during the day.
