English-speaking west African country, located about 300 miles north of the equator on the Gulf of Guinea; full of warm, empty, easy-to-ride surf. California surf filmmaker Bruce Brown, along with surfers Mike Hynson and Robert August, arrived in Ghana in 1963 to shoot a sequence for Brown's Endless Summer, and Surfer magazine's nomadic wave-hunters Kevin Naughton and Craig Peterson, also from California, spent time here in 1975. The 335- mile Ghanaian coastline is for the most part made up of gently sloping tropical beaches, interspersed with a few dozen point- and rivermouth breaks, some charted, others still unsurfed. Labadi Beach, a sand-bottom break near the capital city of Accra, is Ghana's most popular surf spot, and is conveniently located in front of the country's only luxury hotel. Prime surf season runs from May to October, as Atlantic Ocean swells arrive from the south and southwest, daytime air temperatures cool down to about 80 degrees, and water temperatures dip to the low 70s. Ghana is one of Africa's healthiest countries, but malaria and hepatitis remain a threat. Visiting surfers must bring all necessary equipment with them, as Ghana has no surf industry and just a handful of native surfers. "Even at the beach nobody seemed to have any idea what a surfboard was," surf journalist Sam George wrote in 1997, describing his journey through Ghana, towing a surfboard behind his mountain bike. "'Where you go, white man?' they'd ask. 'And why do you bring a bed?'"
