Battle-obsessed Hollywood writer/director/producer, best known to surfers as the creative force behind 1978's 

, a Warner Brothers' film that drew on Milius's experiences at Malibu in the late '50s and early '60s. Milius was born (1944) in St. Louis, Missouri. He enlisted in the army, but was released due to asthma; he then enrolled in the University of Southern California School of Cinema, along with George Lucas (Steven Spielberg and Francis Ford Coppola were also apprentice filmmakers in Los Angeles at the same time), and graduated in 1967.

 did poorly at the box office, but eventually became a popular video rental. Milius, a self-described "Zen-fascist" who served as an NRA boardmember for six years, had greater success as the screenwriter for 

 (1994). "Go ahead, make my day," the Clint Eastwood/Dirty Harry challenge, was a Milius-written line.

 (1979), Milius created Hollywood's best and most believable surfing character, Colonel Bill Kilgore. Played to perfection by Robert Duvall, Kilgore orders a massive napalm drop on a seaside Vietcong village, so that a handful of surfer/infantrymen can safely ride waves at a nearby pointbreak. Warned beforehand that the point belongs to "Charlie"—short for Victor-Charles, code name for Vietcong—Kilgore angrily responds: "Charlie don't surf!" Another Milius line. (Walter Sobchak, the explosive Vietnam war vet played by John Goodman in 1998's 

Milius' obsession with war extended to his surfing; he named his boards after World War II German battleships. In 2008, Milius did the voice-over narration for 

, a documentary about how surfers responded to the Vietnam war. Milius was featured in the Greg MacGillivray-produced documentary
