Smith, Col (Newcastle) (? – 1986)

Hard-charging Australian goofyfooter from Newcastle, New South Wales, described by two-time Pipeline Masters winner Rory Russell in 1977 as the "most underrated surfer in the world." At the end of that year, Smith, a world tour rookie, won the Pro Class Trials held at Sunset Beach, then finished seventh in the Pipeline Masters. He was labeled the "new" Col Smith, to distinguish him from Sydney's Col Smith—another Australian goofyfoot and the winner of the 1977 Australian National Titles.
