Quiet and athletic surf photographer from Durban, South Africa, best known for his 1990s wide-angle images shot from inside the tube. "Guys like Chris van Lennep," Carve magazine wrote, "helped define our surfing world with their heavy-water photography."

Van Lennep was born (1959) in Durban, the son of a tire salesman father and accountant mother. He began surfing at 15, at Durban's Bay of Plenty, and two years later, using a Kodak Instamatic, started taking surf photographs of his brother and friends.

Unsure if photography would suffice as a career, van Lennep worked as a fitter machinist throughout his 20s.

Van Lennep's first published photo was a 1984 centerspread in the Durban-produced 

 surf magazine. In 1989, he became a senior staffer at 

, at which point he became a full-time photographer.

While van Lennep did portraiture, lineups, and land-based action photography, he mostly built on the dripping-wet edge-of-disaster style pioneered by Dan Merkel and further developed by Don King, in which the goal was to put the viewer within a breath's distance of the surfer, preferably in or around the tube.

 covers, all wide-angle water shots using a 15-mm "fisheye" lens (the only way to get close and also capture all or most of the surfer), including an inside-the-tube-looking-out image at Pipeline, captioned as "the view we all desire." As former 

 editor Jeremy Saville later recalled, by that time Van Lennep was "hugely respected, a living legend in South Afria; not quite on par with Shaun Tomson, but close."
