This two-page article ran in the November 1965 issue of SURFER. It's a cramped little thing, 11 vertical shots and a column of text all jammed together, fighting for attention. I'd argue that Munoz and Patterson are both sentimental picks, and don't belong on the list. On the other hand, Phil kind of says as much, noting that he picked according to contributions made "over the years." Fair enough. Except, wait a minute. How do you not put Gary Propper on the list?! Fastest feet in the East . . . and West, North and South! Gary must have been biting Edwards' action at Hobie, is all I can think of.

Nonetheless, as a tip of the hat to Phil, as well as his ten choices, I made the video you see above. Holy smokes, how much better is Nuuhiwa than the other nine? The guy was from a different planet.

Picking the ten best in any sport is a rough job because so many stars have to be left off the list. This is especially true in surfing, [which] today totally abounds in great noseriders. There are some really fantastic noseriders coming out of the junior ranks, and they'll certainly be heard from in years to come. Herb Torrens, Danny Tompkins, Mike Purpus and Alf Laws are just a few of the red-hot juniors who, I feel, will carry surfing to new creative peaks. But this list is limited to those surfers who over the years have shown a truly great talent for riding the nose. While there a lot of really excellent noseriders left off the list, those on it are, in my opinion—THE BEST!
